Last year, stage and screen star Virginia Gay played the title role in Calamity Jane for seven ‘Neglected Musicals‘ performances of the classic 1950s musical. These shows were a slapdash affair, performed with script in hand, but were extremely popular, selling out well in advance.
Now Gay is returning to the role with a full-scale production at the Hayes Theatre Co. This Neglected Musical is neglected no more!
The new production of Calamity Jane will be a stripped back, gritty re-imagining of the musical, drawing inspiration from the HBO series Deadwood, and exploring the feminist and queer undertones of the show.
In addition to announcing the full cast of the show today, Daily Review has an exclusive, in-studio performance of Secret Love, by Gay and the show’s musical director Nigel Ubrihien.
Joining Gay in the cast are Laura Bunting (Rent, Side Show) as Katie Brown, Anthony Gooley (Of Mice and Men, All My Sons) as Wild Bill Hickock, Sheridan Harbridge (Charlie Brown, The Detective’s Handbook) as Miss Adelaide Adams, Rob Johnson (Carrie, The Detective’s Handbook) as Francis Fryer, Matthew Pearce (Rent, Rolling Thunder Vietnam) as Lt Danny Gilmartin and Tony Taylor (As You Like it, The 39 Steps) as Henry Miller.
