Victorian Opera’s concert presentation of Bellini’s La Sonnambula, starring Jessica Pratt, is the first Australian production to be made available on the free streaming website The Opera Platform.
The Opera Platform was launched in May 2015, curated by Opera Europa, a body with 170 opera companies across the world in its membership. Victorian Opera is its first Australian member.
La Sonnambula will be available to stream here (or to view below) from today until October 31. The performance was filmed on Friday, May 5 at Hamer Hall in Melbourne, and is conducted by Victorian Opera’s Artistic Director Richard Mills.
Victorian Opera’s Managing Director Andrew Snell said: “I’m greatly excited for Victorian Opera to stream its first production, free and on demand, via The Opera Platform. The company aims to make opera as accessible as possible through a range of means, including digital technologies. Audiences across the globe will be able to experience this sublime concert performance and hear some of the finest voices from Australia and abroad.”
At the same time, Australian audiences are able to get a taste of composer Brett Dean and director Neil Armfield’s production of Hamlet. The production, which opened to strong reviews at Glyndebourne Festival Opera, is available to stream in its entirety for free until July 13.
Armfield, who is currently co-Artistic Director of the Adelaide Festival, brought Barrie Kosky’s production of Saul from Glyndebourne to Adelaide this year, and is heavily rumoured to be bringing Hamlet to local audiences in the near future.
