Musicals, News & Commentary, Stage VIDEO: Assassins at Hayes Theatre, starring David Campbell By Ben Neutze | September 19, 2017 | A new production of Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins opens tonight at Sydney’s Hayes Theatre. The musical tells the story of the men and women who successfully or unsuccessfully attempted to assassinate one of the presidents of the United States. But as you’d expect from Sondheim, it’s an inventive and irreverent piece of musical theatre, tracing the evolution of American popular music over more than a century, and digging deep into the psyche of these assassins. The Hayes production is directed by Dean Bryant and features a starry cast, including Bobby Fox, Martin Crewes, Hannah Fredericksen, and David Campbell as John Wilkes Booth.
