Helpmann 2016 full winners list: Matilda’s record-smashing clean sweep

| |

Matilda The Musical has taken home an astonishing 13 Helpmann Awards, including Best Musical and every acting award available to a musical.

It smashes the record for the most Helpmanns won by a single production, previously held by Mary Poppins, which won eight awards in 2011. The musical, which features a score by Australia’s Tim Minchin and premiered at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2010, already has seven Olivier Awards and five Tony Awards in its trophy case.

In his five-star review of the show’s Sydney premiereDaily Review’s Ben Neutze wrote: “Matilda the Musical, with a book by Dennis Kelly and a score by Australian Tim Minchin, is nothing short of a miracle. It’s a rare musical of the kind that only comes around once every decade or two — where the head and the heart work together as one to create something glorious but completely unassuming.”

Minchin won the award for Best Original Score, while the eight young girls who have played the title role in Melbourne and Sydney jointly won Best Female Actor in a Musical. James Millar, who plays the terrifying Miss Trunchbull, was named Best Male Actor in a Musical.

The only other musical to win an award — despite a strong year of major commercial musicals — was Queensland Theatre Company’s Ladies in Black, which took home Best New Australian Work. It features a score by Tim Finn and a book by Carolyn Burns, and is touring to Sydney and Canberra, and returning to Brisbane and Melbourne early next year.

Sydney’s Griffin Theatre won Best Play for its production of Angus Cerini’s The Bleeding Treebeating out Nicola Gunn’s Piece for Person and Ghetto Blaster, Melbourne Theatre Company’s North by Northwest, and La Boite and Brisbane Festival’s Prize Fighter. The play also won Best Direction of a Play (Lee Lewis) and Best Female Actor in a Play (Paul Arundell). Mark Leonard Winter takes home two Helpmanns, both for Best Actor in a Play for his performance in Melbourne Theatre Company’s Birdland, and Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Sydney Theatre Company’s King Lear.

Leo Schofield’s Brisbane Baroque festival performed strongly in the opera categories, with Agrippina winning Best Opera and three other awards. It was a strong year for Queensland in general, winning seven awards.

Bangarra Dance Theatre also picked up three awards, including Best Ballet or Dance Work for Sheoak.
