Administrator extraordinaire and South Australian arts patriarch Rob Brookman AM will be honoured with the Sue Nattrass Award at this year’s Helpmann Awards.
The award honours “exceptional service to the Australian live performance industry”, and goes to those working behind the scenes to support the industry. Its previous winners are Michael Lynch, Patricia Boggs and Eric Robinson.
Brookman recently finished a five-year term as the Executive Director at the State Theatre Company of South Australia, and will soon take up the role of Executive Director at Adelaide Festival.
Over the course of his career, he’s worked at many of Australia and New Zealand’s leading arts companies, including Adelaide Festival (Administrator, Associate Director, Artistic Director), Adelaide Festival Centre (Programming Director, Producer, Artistic Director), National Festival of Australian Theatre (Artistic Director), New Zealand International Festival of Arts (Artistic Director), Arts Projects Australia (Founding Co-Director) and Sydney Theatre Company (General Manager).
He also co-founded Adelaide’s world music festival WOMADelaide and has served as Artistic Director or Artistic Advisor for the festival’s 15 years.
Brookman’s children all work in the arts — Torben is a theatre producer, Kit is a playwright, and Geordie is the Artistic Director of the State Theatre Company of South Australia.
In a statement, Brookman said: “I have been blessed to be able to pursue a livelihood in the arts that involves doing things and working with people that I absolutely love; and doubly fortunate to have worked in our industry at a time of incredible change and development which has afforded opportunities that were undreamed of when I started out. To be so generously recognised by my peers through the Sue Nattrass Award is the best kind of icing on the most fabulously rich, complex, beautiful and utterly enjoyable, cake.”
The award will be presented at this year’s Helpmann Awards ceremony, which will be held on July 24 at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre. It was today announced that the casts of Kinky Boots, The Book of Mormon, Aladdin and My Fair Lady will all be performing at the ceremony. Tickets to the event will be available through Ticketmaster from May 1.
