The cast of the upcoming production Georgy Girl – the Seekers Musical was announced today at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl, the site of The Seekers’ iconic March 1967 free concert which drew a record-breaking crowd of over 200,000.
Formed in Melbourne in 1962, The Seekers were the first Australian group to top the charts in the US and the UK, and the first group ever to reach number one on the UK charts with their first three singles.
The cast of the Georgy Girl musical, due to open on December 22 at Her Majesty’s in Melbourne, is led by Pippa Grandison (as Judith Durham), Phillip Lowe (as Keith Potger), Mike McLeish (as Bruce Woodley) and Glaston Toft (as Athol Guy).
These four new Seekers (not to be confused with the New Seekers) performed I’ll Never Find Another You and the Oscar-nominated hit Georgy Girl on the Bowl’s stage. Ian Stenlake, who plays tour manager John Ashby, joined Grandison for the duet Colours Of My Life.
The Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Robert Doyle was in attendance at the launch proclaiming: “This is not just a show in one of our theatres. This is our show. This is Melbourne. This is Georgy Girl.”
Three of the original Seekers members Athol Guy, Keith Potger and Judith Durham were also there and gave their alter-egos a standing ovation after their performance. (Fourth Seekers original member Bruce Woodley sent his greetings via a short video message.)
Double-bassist Guy said the Sidney Myer Music Bowl was the perfect location for the announcement of the musical. “What a great place to be launching it. This was such a seminal moment in our lives and it’s just wonderful to be here today,” he said.
“We’re looking forward to opening night ourselves,” said lead singer Durham, who has also been named 2015 Victorian of the Year. “We’re going to actually be part of that audience, experiencing the same excitement as you.”
Directed by Gary Young, written by Patrick Edgeworth, and produced by Richard East and Dennis Smith, Georgy Girl tells the story of the folk group’s humble beginnings in Melbourne, their rise to international stardom, and their successful silver and golden reunion tours.
The world premiere of Georgy Girl – The Seekers Musical is on December 22 at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne. Tickets go on sale on August 27. The limited season will run for 14 weeks, followed by a 9-week season in April 2016 at The State Theatre in Sydney.
