News & Commentary Helpmann Nominations 2016 full list: Matilda dominates with 13 nods By Ben Neutze | June 20, 2016 | Tim Minchin’s Matilda The Musical has dominated the 2016 Helpmann Award nominations, announced tonight at events across the country. The musical is up for 13 awards, including Best Musical, Best Director of a Musical, Best Male Actor in a Musical, Best Female Actor in a Musical and even Best Original Score for Minchin’s music and lyrics. In the Best Musical category, it’s nominated alongside the new Tim Finn and Carolyn Burns-penned musical Ladies in Black (six nominations), as well as revivals of Fiddler on the Roof (four nominations) and The Sound of Music (four nominations). Despite missing out on a nomination in the Best Musical category, Little Shop of Horrors also performed strongly with five nominations, including Best Director of a Musical, Best Male Actor and Best Female Actor in a Musical. When it comes to the Theatre categories, no productions truly dominate. Melbourne Theatre Company’s North by Northwest is out in front with five nominations, followed by La Boite and Brisbane Festival’s Prize Fighter on four. Both plays are nominated for Best Play, alongside Griffin Theatre’s The Bleeding Tree and Nicola Gunn’s Piece for Person and Ghetto Blaster. Sydney Theatre Company has lost some of its dominance from recent years, only picking up five nominations this year (down from 15 last year). Both Richard Roxburgh and Cate Blanchett are nominated for their roles in The Present, which goes to Broadway later this year. It’s also a very strong year for Brisbane-born productions, with Brisbane Baroque’s Agrippina receiving seven nominations (the most of any opera), and both Ladies in Black and Prize Fighter premiering in Brisbane. The winners will be announced on July 25 at the Sydney Lyric Theatre, on the set of Singin’ in the Rain.
