My Fair Lady leads Helpmann Awards 2017 nominations: full list

Opera Australia and John Frost’s revival of My Fair Lady, directed by Dame Julie Andrews, is the front-runner for this year’s Helpmann Awards, having picked up nine nominations.

But it’s a tight race in the musical theatre categories, with Book of Mormon in a close second with eight nominations, and Aladdin and Kinky Boots with seven each.

Those four musicals make up the nominees for the Best Musical award, and have earned each of their directors a nomination for Best Direction of a Musical.

Several of the musical theatre categories are dominated by foreign artists, including the Best Direction of a Musical and Best Choreography in a Musical categories, which are both populated entirely by foreign artists. Unusually, three of the four nominees for Best Actor in a Musical are foreign artists.

This comes after Australia’s musical theatre community last year expressed concern over the growing number of foreign artists in leading roles in local productions. Live Performance Australia, the body that runs the Helpmann Awards, denied that there was a trend, labelling the use of foreign artists a “non-issue”.

It’s also been a big year for the Adelaide Festival, with 13 nominations going to events at the festival, including seven for Barrie Kosky’s production of the opera Saul. The production was originally created by the Australian expat director for Glyndebourne Festival Opera.

Saul is up for Best Opera against three Opera Australia productions: King Roger, Cavalleria Rusticana & I Pagliacci, and Così fan tutte. Opera Australia has the most nominations of any company across the country, with 26 nods, helped along by its involvement in My Fair Lady.

Leah Purcell may soon add even more awards to her already bulging trophy cabinet for her play, The Drover’s Wife. The play is up for six awards, including Best New Australian Work, Best Female Actor in a Play for Purcell’s performance, and Best Play.

In the Best Play category, Purcell faces Melbourne Theatre Company’s Jasper Jones, Queensland Theatre’s Once in Royal David’s City and State Theatre Company of South Australia’s Things I Know to be True.

But The Drover’s Wife isn’t Belvoir’s only big hope: the company has scored 11 nominations, the most of any theatre company, including four for Faith Healer. All three cast members of the play are nominated for acting awards alongside director Judy Davis.

The winners of the 2017 Helpmann Awards will be announced at a ceremony on Monday, July 24 at the Capitol Theatre, Sydney.
