This is Going to Hurt, premiering in Australia at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, is the accompanying show to the book of the same title, written by Adam Kay, a beleaguered British OB-GYN turned stand-up comedian.
If you scoff at the idea of a presumably well-paid specialist surgeon forsaking his career for the uncharted territory of stand-up, Kay will very quickly dispel those preconceptions. He lampoons the red tape, underfunding and absurdity innate to the United Kingdom’s National Health Service. One of his cornerstone lines? “Given all the overtime, the hospital parking meter turned out to be on a better rate than I was.”
Kay’s book has sold 2 million copies, and over 150,000 people in his home country have seen his show. With acerbic wit and promising sidesplitting anecdotes about the medical profession, This is Going to Hurt will be a hot ticket of the festival.
