Ensemble Theatre reveals 2017 line-up: Barbra, Woolf & new plays galore

Sydney’s Kirribilli-based Ensemble Theatre has revealed its 2017 program, which includes four world premiere plays out of a season of 10.

Continuing his long relationship with the theatre company, David Williamson’s new social comedy Odd Man Out kicks off the season, starring Rachel Gordon, Justin Stewart Cotta, Lisa Gormley and Matt Minto.

Kate Mulvany’s new play The Rasputin Affair (pictured above – cast member Zindzi Okenyo) will also get its world premiere at Ensemble. The play follows an assassination attempt on the Mad Monk himself.

Kit Brookman won the Ensemble Theatre New Writing Commission this year, and will premiere The Plant at the theatre, starring Sandy Gore.

Amanda Muggleton will star in John Misto’s (The Shoe-Horn Sonata) new play Lip Service about make-up giant Helena Rubenstein and her wars with Elizabeth Arden and Revlon.

There are also some new international plays, including Jonathan Tolins’ one-man hit comedy Buyer and Cellar, starring Ben Gerard. The play follows a young, out-of-work actor who lands a job in Barbra Streisand’s basement mall, and received its Australian premiere at Melbourne Theatre Company last year. Continuing on the Streisand theme, Trevor Ashley will present his new cabaret Barbra and Me at Ensemble.

The season is rounded out by a few classics, including Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolfwhich will star Darren Gilshenan and Genevieve Lemon as George and Martha.

One response to “Ensemble Theatre reveals 2017 line-up: Barbra, Woolf & new plays galore

  1. Great season for Ensemble theatre but it’ll be interesting to see the version of Virginia Woolf I heard about with Deb Galanos and Nick Papademetriou in November. This will be awesome!!!
