Whitney fans rejoice! It was announced this morning that The Bodyguard – the Musical will open in Sydney in April next year before an Australian tour. No casting or venue details have been revealed yet, but the Australian production comes from local producer John Frost and UK producers David Ian and Michael Harrison.
The musical opened on the West End in 2012 to generally strong reviews. Time Out London wrote, in a mostly positive review: “There is surely an excruciatingly tacky musical adaptation of the Whitney Houston-starring romantic thriller The Bodyguard to be made. But this is not it.”
It features hits from the 1992 film’s soundtrack, I Will Always Love You, Queen of the Night and I Have Nothing alongside other Whitney Houston songs such as I’m Every Woman and I Wanna Dance with Somebody.
Frost, who co-produced the original London production, said: “I’m thrilled that Australia will finally get to see this sensational, multi-million-dollar musical … This iconic story and those soaring ballads were itching to be made into a stage musical, and its success over the past four years has proved it. The original production was extended many times with audiences flocking to the show, and the subsequent UK tour has broken box office records at most of the theatres where it’s played. I know Australian audiences will love The Bodyguard as much as I do.”
The biggest question has to be: who will play Rachel Marron, the role made famous by Whitney Houston? The rumour mill is already spinning with word that a star of Broadway and the West End might be making the trip to open the tour in Australia, and a local reality star could also be in the running.
Whoever it is, they’ll have to measure up to Whitney’s iconic vocals.
