Best of Brisbane Theatre honoured at 2014 Matilda Awards

Queensland Theatre Company’s Gloria (pictured above) took out the top prize for Best Mainstage Production at last night’s Matilda Awards in Brisbane, but it was La Boite Theatre Company and Brisbane Festival’s new take on Ibsen’s A Doll’s House (adapted by Lally Katz) which took home four awards, the most for any production.

Helen Christinson took home the award for Best Female Actor for her performance in A Doll’s House and Sven Swenson won Best Male Actor for Angel Gear. Best Independent Production went to Angel Gear while Harvest Rain won Best Musical for its production of Spamalot, starring Jon English and Simon Gallaher.

The Matilda Awards were established in 1987 by critics Sue Gough and Daily Review’s Alison Cotes. There are 12 Silver Matilda Awards, as well as five Gold Matildas, awarded for “outstanding work in any area of the professional theatre industry, which also includes independent productions.” They can be either for a single production or a body of work.
