VIDEO: Kate Miller-Heidke's The Rabbits

Based on John Marsden and Shaun Tan’s 1998 picture book, The Rabbits is Opera Australia’s first new opera in five years — and it’s made for audiences of all ages. The opera, which is co-produced with Western Australia’s Barking Gecko Theatre Company, tells a metaphorical tale of colonisation and dispossession, and will have a spectacular mystical landscape design from Gabriela Tylesova.

Daily Review’s Ben Neutze spoke to director and adaptor John Sheedy and composer Kate Miller-Heidke about the challenges of mounting a new opera and exactly who The Rabbits is made for.

The Rabbits has its world premiere at the Perth Festival from February 12 and then plays Melbourne Festival from October 9.

The Rabbits is an Opera Australia and Barking Gecko Theatre Company co-production. In association with West Australian Opera. Commissioned by Melbourne Festival and Perth International Arts Festival.
