Sydney Theatre Awards 2015: the full winners list

Belvoir’s production of Ivanov (pictured above) has won Best Mainstage Production at tonight’s Sydney Theatre Awards for shows presented in 2015. In the Mainstage categories, it also picked up Best Director for Eamon Flack, Best Supporting Actress for Blazey Best and Best Supporting Actor for John Howard.

Hugo Weaving won Best Lead Actor for his performance in Endgame, while Eryn Jean Norvill won Best Lead Actress for Suddenly Last Summer over fellow nominees Cate Blanchett, Paula Arundell and Jacqueline McKenzie.

The musical theatre categories were this year expanded to recognise the breadth of work across both the commercial and independent sector in 2015, taking the total number of awards up to a record 36. Matilda won Best Production of a Mainstage Musical as well as Best Supporting Actress for Elise McCann and Best Supporting Actor for James Millar. The four young actresses who share the title role were given a Special Achievement Award.

Best Lead Actor in a Musical went to Hayden Tee for his performance as Javert in Les Miserables, a role he will be reprising on Broadway later this year. Amy Lehpamer took out Best Lead Actress in a Musical for her performance in The Sound of Music.

The Hayes Theatre Company production of Violet was the big winner in the independent musical theatre categories, taking home Best Production of an Independent Musical, Best Director of a Musical (Mitchell Butel) and Best Musical Direction (Lucy Bermingham).

Sport for Jove’s Of Mice and Men won Best Independent Production and Best Director of an Independent Production (Iain Sinclair), as well as Best Stage Design of an Independent Production.

Veteran producer Christine Dunstan, who has hundreds of productions to her name, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Sydney Theatre Awards are presented by a group of leading theatre critics including Daily Review’s Ben Neutze, Elissa Blake (Sun Herald), Jason Blake (Sydney Morning Herald), Dee Jefferson (Time Out), Deborah Jones (The Australian), Jo Litson (Sunday Telegraph), John McCallum (The Australian), Diana Simmonds (stagenoise.com), Polly Simons (Daily Telegraph) and Cassie Tongue (AussieTheatre).
