Playlist: Jonny Seymour

DJ Jonny Seymour is one half of stereogamous, an electronic music duo that has worked with George Michael and created remixes for artists including Kylie Minogue and Sia Furler. Along with partner Paul Mac, Seymour has created the score for Sydney Theatre Company and ATYP’s M.Rocka play about a 70-year-old grandmother, and performs onstage as a DJ. We asked him to share some of his favourite tracks and a little insight into creating the score for M.Rock.

For stereogamous, writing the music for M-Rock was informed by a long summer of listening, dancing and living in an open relationship with music in Berlin, where the majority of the play is based. There are very few cities in the world that accept “rave” as a lifestyle choice, and not just a weekend hobby. All of these artists in the list are major influences in the sound of our studio. The best way to condense a love of an ocean of sound into list is to relate all the factors that would come together for my wedding dress.

Something old

I’m Lost – Sarah Vaughn

Sarah Vaughn’s track is one of the only “song songs” used in the M.Rock soundtrack. Apart from her beautiful vocal, super appropriate narrative to the play, it’s the intoxicating instrumentation and orchestration by Quincy Jones on this track that are used to beautiful effect for the trippy / fantasy scenes in the production.

Something New

He Said – Tobias Freund

Tobias Freund is a Berlin mainstay and an icon of the electronic music movement. His compositions constantly deliver on future sounds yet are firmly rooted in traditional techno. His latest album “A Series of Shocks” on highly revered techno-temple Berghain’s own label Ostgut Ton is an essential release for 2014.

Something Borrowed

The Alphabet – Aérea Negrot

One of the beauties of music is it’s ability to be shared between us. Aérea Negrot was introduced to me via her album Arabxilla on German electronic label Bpitch Control via a recommendation from a dear friend. She is an incredible producer and modern day chanteuse, channelling powerhouse vocalists as diverse as Eartha Kitt, Grace Jones, Klaus Nomi and Maria Callas, but still fiercely unique and uniquely fierce!

Something Blue

Nightcrawler – Patrick Cowley

There are so many wonderful pioneers of electronic music. Patrick Joseph Cowley was an American disco and Hi-NRG dance music composer and recording artist who collaborated with queens of disco Donna Summer and  Sylvester. His compositions were always about a sonic future. This track is from the album School Daze, a collection of electronic instrumentals recorded between 1973 and 1981, soundtrack cuts from vintage gay porn films.

Self-serving song

Stereogamous featuring Shaun J Wright

Shaun is from Chicago and is all kinds of incredible. He has a prolific canon of works each highlighting his beautiful voice and lyrics with a message of loving freely. With the narrative of M.Rock coming from the script, stripping this track down to its bare beats and synths hasn’t lost any of it’s potency.
